Description

Since the 1920s, particle accelerators play an important role in the research into the structure of matter and the understanding of the fundamental forces of nature. Moreover, important applications of accelerators into health and industry are available for the society.

This course, “Introduction to Particle Accelerator Physics”, tries to give an overview of the most important aspects of this domain, focussing not in detailed derivation of formulas, but in the understanding of the basic principles and concepts.

The course is divided in two core themes: introduction to transverse beam dynamics and introduction to longitudinal beam dynamics. The basic principles and concepts will be further studied with exercises and MADX examples.
Along with these two core topics, the basic components of an accelerator will be reviewed, like magnets, radio frequency cavities, beam diagnostics, etc.

The course will be complemented with three seminars to give the students an overview of state of the art development in this field. The seminars will cover an overview of the future accelerators that are planned, an overview of new-very-appealing accelerator techniques like wake field acceleration.
