Summary:
Nuclear fusion as an energy source is being investigated since the 1950s. Despite early expectations to demonstrate its feasibility on relatively short timescales, this optimistic objective could not yet be achieved. However, significant progress was reported in recent years and several start-up companies have now embarked on the path to bring fusion to earth and promised results within one to two decades. The presentation will explain the concepts for fusion as energy source on earth and give an overview of the current status and crucial challenges still to be solved. Showing highlights from ITER, the fusion experiment being built in international cooperation to test technology, materials and physics for commercial fusion-based electricity, as well as the broader worldwide fusion landscape, the presentation tries to give an impression of the path forward and its timeline.
