Motivated by the role of non--decoupling effects in Higgs physics within (and beyond) the Standard Model, we revisit some fundamental aspects of (non)decoupling in field theories. Starting from the pioneering works of Symanzik, Appelquist and Carazzone, we revisit the literature on the topic to understand what field theory mechanisms underlie the decoupling of heavy fields; and under which conditions decoupling breaks down. We illustrate all these aspects with examples from beyond-the-Standard model Higgs phenomenology and effective field theories.
