Introduction to the exclusive production at the LHC will be given, with emphasis on a mechanism due to exchange of two photons. Initial results, serving as a proof-of-principle measurement, on the two-photon production of muon pairs will be first described, and will be followed by the present status of studies of high energy photon-photon interactions in CMS. Finally, an outlook will be given for the near and medium term future of this research, including proposed novel forward detectors.
