Description
The pattern of masses for the three generations of quarks and leptons remain an open question in the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Oddly, the possibility of a fourth generation is still not completely excluded by the latest Electroweak precision data. In this perspective, I will review the latest statements in favour of the possible existence of new massive fermions. Given the large number of New Physics models that could be searched for at the LHC, I will discuss how future experiments both on Flavour Physics and on Collider Physics will allow us to exhibit possible inconsistencies of the Standard Model. In order to do so, this research project will focus on the unprecedented sensitivity in the NA62 measurement of rare kaon decay branching ratios. The study of single top production in Collider Physics will help to complete this analysis. A better understanding of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix could also be gained from such direct measurements. Indeed, it is not unlikely that the forthcoming results contradict the Standard Model predictions, so that narrowing it down might be the most efficient way to make progress in the next few years.
