Description
"Top physics in CMS with the LHC data in 2010" After many years of preparation, the Large Hadron Collider produced its first collisions on the 23rd of November this year, and after some more commissioning of the accelerator and of the detectors at 2.36 and 7 TeV it is planned to provide in 2010 a long "physics run", not stopping before having accumulated an integrated luminosity of 200(300) pb^-1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 10(8) TeV. This seminar will introduce the CMS plans for top quark studies with the foreseen 2010 data: from the "re-discovery" of the top quark with the first inverse picobarns (and the first cross section measurements at 10 or 8 TeV), to the first competitive limits on |Vtb|. Emphasis will be given to the strategies to maximize the robustness of the analyses, and to the "in situ" determinations of the major backgrounds.
