Description
The success of the Standard Model (SM) in describing the phenomenology of particle physics in the last 30 years is astonishing. Nevertheless, there are fundamental aspects of the model that have never been confirmed experimentally and, on another side, there is compelling evidence that the SM must be an effective theory. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will unveil the last secrets of the SM and will discover any physics beyond it at the energy scale of the TeV. In this scenario the study of the top quark has a key role in both aspects. The LHC will be the first top factory ever built: the tremendous potential of (precision) physics in top-pair production will be illustrated with realistic examples and discussed in detail.
