Description

Abstract

Gravitational wave detectors have allowed the first observations of gravitational waves, opening the gravitational wave astronomy era and widening our possibilities to get to know our universe and its history. It is probably less known that gravitational wave technology development has also spinoff in applied physics. In the seminar, applications of gravitational wave science to geophysics and nuclear fusion physics will be shown.

In particular, the common problem of the so called infrasound Newtonian Noise in gravitational wave detectors and in detectors for earthquake early warning system will be treated.

Starting from solutions explored in laser interferometer GW detectors (i.e. Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo), the possibility to have an optical cavity for exploitation in the first nuclear fusion reactor will be presented.
