Kaon Physics at CERN: Recent Results and New Opportunities

Description
The CERN kaon physics programme at the SPS (NA48) has delivered a very broad range of physics results during the past decade, ranging from the discovery of Direct CP-Violation to the study of the strong interaction at low energy. In the seminar I will present the most recent results including: * Search of CP Violation in charged kaon decays * Measurement of the pi -pi scattering length in non-leptoni and semi- leptonic kaon decays * Tests of muon - electron non-universality in kaon leptonic decays The availability of the SPS to deliver high quality secondary beams during the LHC operations allows us to plan new initiatives. I will describe the exciting opportunity to study ultra-rare kaon decays at the SPS in the next few years. A very special class of decays are the K --> pi nu anti-nu . They are sensitive to very high energy scales because, on one hand, the Standard Model (SM) rate is very suppressed and precisely calculable and, on the other hand, sizeable effects are predicted in several extensions of the Standard Model. Therefore such experiments are very complementary to the studies performed at the high energy frontier. The new experiment (NA62) aims to precisely measure, among other things, the decay K+ --> pi+ nu anti-nu. NA62 builds on the infrastructure and on the detectors of NA48 and it is poised continue the outstanding tradition of kaon studies at CERN.
