Several models predict the existence of heavy long-lived charged particles. One of their most distinctive signatures would be the very high specific energy loss (dE/dx) by ionization in the detector. This seminar will review their phenomenology, and will show how dE/dx can be optimally extracted with the Silicon Strip Tracker of CMS, how we can calibrate and trust this variable, and what are the most important sources of error in this kind of measurement.
