Cosmology seminar - Halo bias in the excursion set approach

Gravitationally bound objects (galaxies, dark matter halos) are biased tracers of the underlying dark matter distribution. This bias contains useful information regarding cosmological evolution and the initial conditions of the universe. The excursion set approach, which maps the problem of structure formation onto a statistical study of suitably generated random walks, provides a useful framework in which to study halo bias. After a brief introduction to the excursion set approach in general, I will discuss how it leads to predictions for halo bias. I will then discuss some new results within this framework which (a) show that halo bias in excursion sets is generically scale dependent and (b) suggest a simple measurement technique which can isolate this scale dependence.
