Excursion Waterloo

Approximately 20km east of Louvain-la-Neuve, just south of Waterloo, a vast plain extends through hills and valleys just to the horizon.

On Sunday the 18th June 1815, on this plain, a battle took place which changed the course of European history. A French army under the command of Napoleon was defeated by the armies of the Seventh Coalition, comprising an Anglo-allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington combined with a Prussian army under the command of Gebhard von Blücher. The defeat at Waterloo ended Napoleon's rule as Emperor of  France, and marked the end of his Hundred Days return from exile. Today, the site of the battlefield is dominated by a large monument, the Lion's Mound, constructed from earth taken from the battlefield.
