Friday, February 2
Time: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Summary: ULB seminar: Carlos de los Heros - "Particle physics with neutrino telescopes"
Description: Abstract:
Large-scale neutrino telescopes offer interesting possibilities to address particle physics topicsranging from particle searches to neutrino oscillations or tests of fundamental laws. They can even do so at energy ranges not accessible to accelerators, providing a much desiredcomplementarity to accelerator-based physics. I will review recent results from the existinghigh-energy neutrino telescopes, with special emphasis on IceCube, on searches for monopoles, signatures for TeV gravity, extra dimensions, tests of Lorentz invariance and neutrino oscillations.

Time: 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM
Summary: ULB seminar: Rupert Coy - "Dynamical Clockwork Axions"
Description: The clockwork mechanism is a novel method for generating a large separation between the dynamical scale and interaction scale of a theory. In this talk, I will first introduce the mechanism, before demonstrating how it can arise from a sequence of strongly-coupled sectors. This framework avoids elementary scalar fields and continuous global symmetries, both of which are subject to stability issues. Here, the clockwork factor, q, is determined by the consistency of the strong dynamics. The preserved global U(1) of the clockwork appears as an accidental symmetry, resulting from discrete or U(1) gauge symmetries. This dynamical clockwork mechanism is used to construct models of an effectively invisible QCD axion from TeV-scale strong dynamics. I discuss the collider phenomenology and cosmological implications of these models. The TeV spectrum includes either coloured hadrons or vector-like quarks, while dark matter can be accounted for by the axion or the lightest neutral baryons, which areaccidentally stable.
